Food insecurity remains a major challenge in Burundi, where approximately 1.8 million people are estimated to be food insecure. Many households struggle to access sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their daily dietary needs. Food security exists only when all people, at all times, have both physical and economic access to adequate food that supports an active and healthy life.

In Burundi, several factors continue to undermine food security. Persistent conflicts, economic fluctuations, rapid population growth, and climatic shocks—such as recurrent floods, hailstorms, droughts, and torrential rains—have significantly affected agricultural production and household livelihoods. These challenges reduce the availability of food, limit people’s ability to access it, and weaken its nutritional impact on communities.

Achieving food security requires the combined presence of three essential elements: food availability, food access, and food utilization. Food must be produced and available in sufficient quantities and on a consistent basis. Households must also be able to access and acquire food regularly in adequate amounts. Finally, the food consumed must provide the necessary nutritional value to support good health and well-being.

To address these challenges and strengthen household resilience, Help Channel Burundi aims to support the development of food-secure households in targeted communities. The organization focuses on practical and sustainable interventions designed to improve agricultural productivity, reduce food losses, and promote better nutrition.

The implementation of this initiative will include the following key activities:

  1. Increasing agricultural production by promoting good agronomic practices such as soil conservation techniques and improved access to quality agricultural inputs.

  2. Improving post-harvest food conservation through training on post-harvest handling and the promotion of appropriate food storage technologies to reduce losses.

  3. Promoting better food consumption and nutrition by educating and empowering communities on the benefits of nutritious and balanced diets.

These interventions will primarily target the most vulnerable households, including single-parent households, elderly individuals living alone, female-headed households, and smallholder farming families with limited or no land. By strengthening agricultural production, improving food management practices, and increasing awareness of nutritious diets, the project aims to enhance food availability, access, and utilization within these communities.

Through these efforts, Help Channel Burundi seeks to contribute to more resilient households that are better able to withstand economic and climatic shocks while ensuring sustainable access to nutritious food.
