Given the central role that agriculture plays in Burundi’s economy and in the livelihoods of most rural households, Help Channel Burundi supports farmers through self-help groups and cooperatives to increase productivity, strengthen value chains, improve market access, and access financial services. These interventions contribute to higher incomes, improved food security, and greater resilience among rural communities.

To achieve this, we:

• Strengthen agricultural value chains by working with farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness actors to improve production, storage, processing, and marketing practices. This helps producers increase efficiency, improve product quality, and access more profitable markets.
• Reduce post-harvest losses and improve market opportunities through the community-based construction of storage facilities and grain warehouses. These investments enable farmers to preserve the quality of their harvests, reduce losses, and sell their produce when market conditions are more favorable.
• Promote value addition and local enterprise development by providing grain processing equipment that enables producer groups and cooperatives to transform crops into flour, fufu, and other marketable products. This increases the value of agricultural produce while creating additional income and employment opportunities within communities.
• Enhance financial inclusion and household resilience by linking self-help groups, savings groups, and cooperatives to financial services and credit opportunities. Access to finance enables community members to invest in income-generating activities, expand small businesses, and strengthen their capacity to withstand economic shocks.
